The line I'd underline is the one about reconnecting when we've missed the mark. Ed Tronick's research found that even attuned parents and infants are out of sync much of the time. Security grows from the repair that follows. That's freeing news for any parent who once read every cry as a verdict on themselves.

Indeed! Simply being present, even when we don't fully know what they need, builds that confidence in trusting someone is there to at least try to support us. I have a second article coming out tomorrow on what Responsive Parenting asks of us, and it touches a bit more on the importance of mere presence (and the value of repair). I hope that one hits the mark on this important topic, and will love to have your added reflections!
